PEYOTE ROOTS
ROOTS OF THE PEYOTE CACTUS
The roots of a Peyote Cactus are rarely seen, but are a very important organ for the Peyote.
The root of the Peyote Cactus is tuberous, and white in colour.
In nature, the root is wedged into the surrounding soil and rock.
Functions of the Peyote root
1. Nutrient uptake.
With its roots, the Peyote absorbs water and nutrients from the soil it grows in.
2. Besides water, this thick root also contains a lot of reserve food for the Peyote.
3. New heads may also grow from the roots if the old heads have disappeared.
The old head may have been eaten by animals, or cut off by Peyote hunters.
