4. WHAT IS THE PERUVIAN TORCH ?
The Peruvian Torch is the English name of a columnar cactus from the Andes mountains in Peru (South America).
The Peruvian Torch contains the alkaloid Mescaline, which has strong mind-altering effects.
The bitter-tasting component Mescaline has strong psychoactive effects in humans.
Mescaline causes strong hallucinations and psychedelic phenomena in users during a trip.
These psychoactive effects have been known to the indigenous people of Peru for thousands of years.
The Mescaline content of the Peruvian Torch is probably as high as that of the San Pedro.
The Peruvian Torch has about the same properties as the San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi).
Use of the Peruvian Torch
The Peruvian Torch is considered a magical and sacred plant by shamans and healers (curanderos).
The Peruvian Torch is used to contact and speak with the gods and ancestors.
During a trip, users experience farsighted and prophetic dreams.
And get clear insights into their life situation.
Brief description of the Peruvian Torch Cactus
The Peruvian Torch Cactus is a fast-growing columnar cactus that can grow about 5 metres long (tall).
The Peruvian Torch Cactus has rounded vertical ribs that are green to grey-blue in colour.
On these ribs are elongated areoles with strong thick thorns on them up to about 8 cm in length.
areole = round to elongated spots on the ribs of Cacti with beige to brown wool or felt.
The Peruvian Torch Cactus grows on the high plains of the Andes Mountains of Peru in South America.
The Peruvian Torch is therefore very resistant to drought periods, as well as cold and humidity.
Achuma Cactus / Huachuma Cactus
The people of Peru call all mind-altering columnar Cacti Achuma and Huachuma.
By this they also mean Cacti called San Pedro or Peruvian Torch.
So they make no difference between the San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi) and the Peruvian Torch (Echinopsis peruviana).
Apparently, making a difference between the two Cacti is not useful because the effects are the same !
Naming
The Peruvian Torch is also called Peruvian Torch Cactus.
The current scientific name of the Peruvian Torch is Echinopsis peruviana.
The former scientific name of the Peruvian Torch is Trichocereus peruvianus.
This species used to be classified in the Cactus genus Trichocereus.
But nowadays, the Peruvian Torch is classified under the Cactus genus Echinopsis.
|
MESCALINE IN THE PERUVIAN TORCH
The Peruvian Torch probably has a slightly lower Mescaline concentration than the San Pedro.
But a lot depends on the specific Mescaline Cacti used for a test.
And whether the Cacti used are classified as San Pedro, Peruvian Torch or with another Cactus species.
Studies, analyses and consumption have clearly demonstrated the strong mind-altering effects !

DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PERUVIAN TORCH
Characteristics of the Peruvian Torch
The Peruvian Torch has a substantial and coarse body with strong thick stabbing thorns up to 10 cm long.
In nature, the characteristics of the Peruvian Torch vary greatly.
Strain of the Peruvian Torch
The Peruvian Torch belongs to the columnar cacti.
The stem can reach a length of more than 5 metres.
The thickness of the stem can reach about 15 - 20 centimetres in nature.
In culture, the stem becomes a maximum of 10 cm thick.
Colour of the body
1. shiny green in watery fattened Peruvian Torch Cacti, and in sown plants up to 20 cm long.
2. grey-blue in cuttings and in strong adult Peruvian Torch Cacti from 20 cm long.
Ribs of Peruvian Torch
The stem has four to nine vertical ribs.
Areoles of the Peruvian Torch
The brown areoles (thorn pads) are larger and feltier than the areoles of the San Pedro.
On the top of the areole is beige to brown felt (wool).
A dark-coloured V-shaped groove (notch) is above each areole.
areole = thorn cushion = spot on a Cactus from which the thorns grow, and the flower bud emerges.
Thorns (spines) of the Peruvian Torch
The Peruvian Torch has significantly thicker and longer spines than the 2 cm long spines of the San Pedro.
The middle thorns are up to 10 cm long, the length of the up to 10 edge thorns is smaller.
Flower of the Peruvian Torch
The diameter of the fragrant white flowers is about 15 - 20 cm.
The flowers open towards evening, blooming at night (night bloomer).
In the morning, the flowers close.
Fruit of the Peruvian Torch
The fruit is pink-purple in colour and contains hundreds of small black seeds.
Natural growing sites
In Peru
-- near Lima.
-- around Huancabamba.
-- near Matucana at an altitude of 2,100 metres.
Meaning of the names of the Peruvian Torch
Trichocereus = cereus (columnar cactus) with hairs. There are brown-black hairs on the flower tube.
peruvianus = found in Peru.
Peruvian = English = of Peru, native to Peru.
Torch = English = portable torch meant for illumination.
San Pedro = Spanish = named after the holy apostle Peter, key keeper of heaven.

GROWTH HABIT OF THE PERUVIAN TORCH
1. Forming groups of several trunks
The Peruvian Torch makes several new stems from the base of the central stem.
A single trunk of the Peruvian Torch can grow more than 5 metres tall (long).
2. Horizontal growth
Often the stems grow diagonally upwards, but sometimes the long stems fall over.
The stem of the Peruvian Torch then lies horizontally on the ground, forming new roots at the base of the trunk.
The head of the Peruvian Torch later grows upwards at an angle.
3. Downward hanging growth
Peruvian Torch Cacti sometimes grow hanging downwards on rocks.

NATURAL GROWING SITES OF THE PERUVIAN TORCH
Growth areas of the Peruvian Torch
In Peru at an altitude of 1300 to 3200 metres.
Planting of the Peruvian Torch
Mind-altering Trichocereus species have been planted by indigenous people around their habitats for centuries.
As a result, Trichocereus species no longer grow only on their natural growing areas.
The natural growth habitats of the Peruvian Torch can therefore not be pinpointed with certainty.
Regions with strong Peruvian Torch Cacti
The region around Matucana in Peru is known to Curanderos for its strong Peruvian Torch Cacti.
The area around Huancabamba in northern Peru is also known for its strong Peruvian Torch Cacti.
|
CROSSBREEDING OF THE PERUVIAN TORCH
There are many crosses between the Peruvian Torch and other Echinopsis (Trichocereus) species.
Crosses with the Peruvian Torch occur in nature, but also in culture.
See the book: Trout - Trout's notes on San Pedro & related Trichocereus species
Trichocereus peruvianus and hybrids (pages 142 - 203).
Reported analysis (pages 197 - 198).

THE PERUVIAN TORCH AND THE LAW
Is the Peruvian Torch a drug cactus?
The Peruvian Torch belongs to the drug cacti because the Peruvian Torch has hallucinogenic effects.
The Peruvian Torch contains the psychoactive alkaloid Mescaline.
There is a relatively high amount of Mescaline in the Peruvian Torch.
The Opium Act and the Peruvian Torch
The Peruvian Torch is not on list 1 or list 2 of the Dutch Opium Act.
This means that the Peruvian Torch can be grown, traded and transported freely in the Netherlands.
The government apparently does not see Drug Cacti as dangerous.
Mescaline and the Opium Act
The Peruvian Torch does contain Mescaline, which as a substance is mentioned in the Opium Act.
You are not allowed to grow, trade or transport Mescaline as a substance (chemical compound).

HISTORY OF THE PERUVIAN TORCH
History until the Spanish invasion of South America
The Peruvian Torch has probably been in use by the indigenous people of South America for thousands of years.
Its mind-expanding properties have also been known to the native Indian people for thousands of years.
Ancient pottery utensils sometimes depict the Peruvian Torch.
Original indigenous names of Peruvian Torch are Achuma or Huachuma.
History since the Spanish invasion of South America
Since the Spanish invasion of South America, Peruvian Torch and its psychedelic effects have also been known in Europe.
So from around the early 16th century, this cactus has been known in Europe.
Christian influences in local traditions
Since the Spanish invasion of many countries in South America (from 1500 AD), many Christian customs were introduced.
Many local indigenous traditions and rituals have therefore been mixed with Christian influences.

BOTANICAL CLASSIFICATION OF THE PERUVIAN TORCH
New Botanical classification of the genus Trichocereus
The Peruvian Torch is currently classified under the Cactus genus Echinopsis.
The current name is therefore Echinopsis peruviana.
Previously, the Peruvian Torch was classified in the Cactus genus Trichocereus.
The former name was Trichocereus peruvianus.
Years ago, the genus Trichocereus was assigned to the Cactus genus Echinopsis.
Therefore, the genus name Trichocereus was changed to the genus name Echinopsis.
The species name peruvianus was also changed slightly.
Trichocereus peruvianus is now officially called Echinopsis peruviana.
Peruvian Torch described as a variety of the San Pedro
The Peruvian Torch was previously described as a variety of the San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi) by F. Ritter.
In nature and in culture, many intermediate forms of both species can be found.
In nature, many transitions can be found between the appearance of the Peruvian Torch and the San Pedro.

WHAT ARE CACTI ?
Cacti are plants characterised by possessing areoles.
Areoles are thickenings on the stem from which hairs, thorns, buds, flowers and fruits grow.
Cacti have thorns or hairs and usually no leaves.
Thorns
Cacti's thorns evolved (gradually developed) from leaves.
The thorns protect a Cactus from the sun and from being eaten by animals.
Cacti are drought plants (xerophytes)
Cacti are drought plants (xerophytes) adapted to survive dry conditions.
Adaptations to drought periods include:
a thicker wax layer, fewer stomata, water cells, no leaves, resting periods, special metabolism.
Succulents
Cacti belong to the succulents (Succulents).
Succulents are plants that store water in their roots, stems and leaves.
Succulents are also built to survive drought periods (xerophytes).
Metabolism
In hot weather, Cacti keep their stomata closed during the day to prevent evaporation.
In the evening and at night, they have their stomata open to assimilate.
In doing so, they take in carbon dioxide (CO2), and expel oxygen (O2).
Habitat
Cacti grow in arid areas such as semi-deserts, but not in deserts.
Cacti grow in all but one species in North America and South America.

Rooting Peruvian Torch cuttings in winter saves 6 weeks of growing time !
Buy unrooted cuttings of the Peruvian Torch (Echinopsis peruviana ) now.
In the coming winter months, the cuttings can dry and root in peace.
So that after their winter rest they can continue growing in sunny weather as early as mid-February.
Letting cuttings dry and root in the growing season takes at least 4 - 6 weeks.
Time when the roots grow slowly, but the top of the cutting does not.
If you then water too quickly when the underside has not yet dried properly,
the underside may rot.
Take the safe way and root Peruvian Torch cuttings in winter!

EXPLANATION OF OUR PERUVIAN TORCH CACTI
Dimensions
The dimensions mentioned are minimum dimensions.
A cutting of 7+ cm therefore means a length of at least 7 cm.
Abbreviations
STEK = unrooted cutting (side branch cut off). In English: cutting.
PLANT = well-rooted plant in a pot.
PLANT IN POT = well-rooted plant in a pot.
Want to buy Peruvian Torch plants or cuttings?
You can buy Peruvian Torch plants or cuttings:
1. Buy thick strong Peruvian Torch cuttings.
To pot up yourself, or to eat ..... !
A cutting makes new roots after 4 to 6 weeks,
after which the rooted Peruvian Torch cutting grows further.
Cuttings of Peruvian Torch Cactus species :
-- are up to about 15 cm in length much thicker, heavier and stronger
than sown Peruvian Torch Cacti (seedlings).
-- possess a thicker outer tissue layer (Chlorenchyme layer),
in which the Mescaline content is highest.
2. Buy well-rooted Peruvian Torch Cacti in a pot
A rooted Peruvian Torch Cactus will grow immediately at home!
That saves: repotting, rooting, deformation due to a growth stop,
and possible loss through infection and rotting.

DISADVANTAGES OF SOWN PERUVIAN TORCH CACTI
1. Sown Peruvian Torch Cacti are often Greenhouse plants
Sown Peruvian Torch Cacti often grow up the first few years in a protected climate.
They are often shielded from the sun, are usually kept warm,
receive a lot of water and fertiliser, and are protected with pesticides.
These ‘greenhouse plants’ are therefore more susceptible to less optimal conditions.
These so-called ‘greenhouse plants’ are thinner, waterier, weaker
and have shorter, thinner and lighter thorns.
2. Sown Peruvian Torch seedlings are difficult to recognise
Young seedlings of Peruvian Torch Cacti:
-- often do not resemble older plants of the same Peruvian Torch species.
-- often resemble other Echinopsis species in the first few years.
You can only tell after a few years which Echinopsis species the seedlings belong to.
3. Cuttings
Therefore, we supply all Echinopsis (Trichocereus) species as:
-- thick strong cuttings.
-- well-rooted cutting in a pot (plant in pot).
