1. WHAT IS PUMICE STONE (BIMS) ?
Bims is a natural volcanic rock.
Bims is formed during the cooling process of liquid lava.
Cavities in Pumice stone (Bims)
Bims contains many small openings (cavities, pores) inside that contain air.
This makes Bims lightweight.
Bims absorbs moisture in the small openings (pores).
The trapped air inside bims is a good insulator.
porous = permeable, permeable, with openings (pores).
porosity = amount of pores (openings) in a material.
Meaning of the word Bims
Bims or Bimskies is a German word for a relatively light volcanic rock.
Translations of Pumice stone
German: bims, bimsstein.
English: pumice.
French: ponce.
Italian: pomice.
Spanish: pómez
Dutch: Puimsteen

4. PROPERTIES OF BIMS (PUMICE STONE)
1. Poor compressibility.
Bims is strong despite its many cells containing air.
2. Light weight
Bims is lightweight due to its many air-filled cavities.
Bims is often lighter than water, so bims floats on water.
The weight is then less than 1 kilo per litre.
Bims is also lighter than most other bricks.
3. Good water absorption
Bims absorbs water in its many small cavities.
4. Good insulator
Bims insulates well due to the trapped cells with air.
|
5. QUALITY OF OUR BIMS
Pure bims with RHP guarantee
Our bims comes from a potting compost company with the RHP Horticulture quality mark.
This quality mark gives guarantee and certainty about the quality of the bims.
RHP = Regeling Handels Potgronden
= Quality mark for substrates.
Hallmark RHP Horticulture
This quality mark for substrates is meant for professional growers in horticulture.
It guarantees the quality of the substrate from extraction up to and including processing at the buyer.
Substrate with the RHP Horticulture Quality mark
The substrate has to comply with certain quality requirements, such as:
1. the control of risks of diseases.
2. guaranteeing certain properties, depending on the type of substrate.
See: RHP Horticulture.
|
6. APPLICATIONS OF BIMS - GENERAL
1. Bims for substrates for plants
Bims can be used as substrate for plants.
However, it is then important that the Bims is not contaminated with other harmful substances.
2. Bims with RHP quality mark for plants
Bims with an RHP quality mark (= phytosanitary quality mark for potting soils) is used as substrate in horticulture.
2.1 supplement in potting soils and substrates (e.g. 10%, 20% etc).
2.2 stand-alone substrate (100% bims).
2. Bims in construction
Bims is also used in construction as:
2.1 insulation material (good insulator).
2.2 filler material in peat areas in particular.
Especially in peat soils, it is important not to compress the soft subsoil too much.
The relatively low weight of Bims pushes the peat down less.
2.3 filler.
2.4 void filler.
|
7. CHUNKS, GRAINS AND FRACTIONS
Bims consists of chunks (grains) and fragments (pellets) of various sizes.
By sieving bims, you can obtain certain fractions (grain sizes).
Fractions: Volume and weight
Each fraction Bims with chunks of a certain size has:
-- its own weight.
-- its own size of the openings between the Bims chunks.

10. SIEVING OF PUMICE STONES
Sifting out bims, rocks and soil is an art in itself !
Functioning of a sieve
A sieve sieves only 2 dimensions: length and width.
Whereas the chunks to be sieved have three dimensions (length, width and height).
So a sieve cannot sieve the 3rd dimension (height) !
After sieving, you also get sieved out chunks with sides longer than the dimensions of the holes of the sieve.
|
11. SIEVING AND FRACTIONS OF PUMICE STONES
1. Sieving with round holes and Fractions
A sieve with round holes also lets grains through that are larger than the diameter of the holes !
A grain or chunk has 3 dimensions: length, width, height.
If 2 dimensions are smaller than the diameter of a round sieve then such a chunk can pass through the sieve.
So even if the 3rd dimension of such a chunk is much longer than the diameter of the holes of the sieve.
Example:
A sieve has round holes 5 mm in diameter.
A chunk of bims has a maximum size of: length 4.9 mm, width 4.9 mm, height 8 mm.
This lump can pass the sieve if the height of the grain is perpendicular to the sieve holes.
2. Sieve with square holes and Fractions
A sieve with square holes:
-- has a diagonal distance between 2 corners that is greater than the distance between two opposite sides.
-- thus also allows grains with a length and width greater than the distance between two opposite sides to pass through.
As a result, oval-shaped particles can still pass through the sieve.
This also applies to a sieve with or rectangular openings.
Oval shape = roundish shape whose length is greater than its width.
Example:
A sieve has square holes with an interval width of 5 mm.
A chunk of bims has a size of: length 5.1 mm, width 5.1 mm, height 8 mm.
This chunk fits through the sieve with holes of 5 x 5 mm, if:
-- the side of greatest length and greatest width are placed in the corners of the opening.
-- the height of the pellet is perpendicular to the sieve holes.
3. Difference between sieves with round holes and square or rectangular holes
1. A sieve with round holes allows only grains to pass through whose:
-- 2 dimensions are smaller than the cross-sectional area of the holes.
Both the length and width of the grain must be smaller than the cross-sectional area of the round hole of the sieve.
2. A sieve with square or rectangular holes also allows grains whose
-- 3 (!) dimensions are larger than the length and width of the holes.
E.g. some pellets with the length and width smaller than the diagonal, and the height arbitrarily long.
So a sieve with round holes has more homogeneous sieved out fractions !

12. SEPARATING AND SIEVINGOF PUMICE STONES FOR PLANTS
1. Separating the different bims chunks
You can separate the chunks of bims into several sizes (fractions) by shaking and sieving.
2. Separating bims by shaking
By shaking a container of bims, the:
-- larger chunks of bims (7 mm and larger) will lie in a loose layer on top of the remaining bims.
-- the very smallest grains (0 to 2 mm) in a dense layer at the bottom of the container.
3. Scooping out the largest bims chunks
With a shovel, you can easily scoop away the large grains from the top layer of a bin.
The middle-sized chunks of bims and the finest grains of bims are then left behind in the bin.
4. Scooping out the middle-sized bims pellets
Shake the container again.
The middle-size pellets will end up in the top half of the bin.
With a shovel, you can easily scoop the middle-size pellets away from the top half of a bin.
The finest grains of bims of 1 to 2 mm will then remain at the bottom of the tray.
4. Separating bims by sieving
You can also use a fine sieve to sift out the smallest grains up to 1 to 2 mm.
|
13. PUMICE STONES FOR PLANTS
Bims is a good type of soil to grow Aas flowers and other plants in.
I n the openings between the small chunks, the roots of Ace flowers can grow easily.
The Bims itself retains moisture with nutrients dissolved in it.
1. Using the larger chunks of Bims (7 mm diameter and larger)
You can use the larger chunks for drainage at the bottom of a flower pot or propagator.
Water runs off along the larger chunks directly downwards.
2. Using the medium-sized chunks of Bims (2 to 7 mm diameter)
This grain size is ideal for many plants.
Plant roots can grow between the Bims grains.
Water is held between the chunks, which the plant can absorb.
3. Use the smallest chunks of Bims (1 to 2 mm diameter)
These smaller stones hold the most water between them.
They therefore dry out the slowest.
The smallest Bims pellets can be used as:
-- supplement to soil mixtures.
-- complete soil mixture for small plants.
-- sowing soil.
4. Size of the Bims grains and size of the Aas flower
Large Aas flowers can also use slightly larger bims grains.
So up to about 6 to 7 mm.
Small Ace flowers can also use the smaller bims grains up to about 1 a 2 mm.
You can also sow in the smallest size grains.
So using grains of about 1 a 2 mm.

ORIGIN OF PUMICE STONES
Bims is found near volcanoes.
Each volcano has its own composition of Bims.
Our Bims comes from the Eifel region in Germany.
Eifel (Germany)
The Eifel is a hilly region (with a peak of 747 metres) around the border of Germany and Belgium.
Volcanic eruptions (eruptions) occurred in the Eifel in the Tertiary period (some 11,000 years back).
Lipari (near Sicily in Italy)
Liparibims comes from the volcanic island of Lipari, northeast of the island of Sicily in Italy.
Yali (Greece)
Yalibims comes from the Greek island of Yali (30 kilometres from the island of Kos).
Hekla (Iceland)
Heklabims has as its origin the volcano Hekla (southwest of Iceland).
|
ORIGIN AND FORMATION OF OF PUMICE STONES
Bims (pumice) is formed during a volcanic eruption (eruption).
During a volcanic eruption, magma is released.
The composition of the magma consists of rocks and many gases (e.g. Sulphur = S).
The small gas bubbles in the still liquid lava remain in the rock during the cooling process.
The rock therefore contains a lot of air, and less rock.
The rock in Bims contains a lot of silicon (silica)
lava = liquid rock above the earth's surface.
magma = liquid rock below the earth's surface.
Due to high temperatures (600-1200 degrees Celsius) deep inside the earth, rocks become liquid.
scoria = pumice containing little silica, and more Iron and Magnesium (= mafic).
|
COMPOSITION OF PUMICE STONES
Bims is a ‘felsic’ rock, or bims contains many minerals with silicon dioxide (= silica).
Felsic rock = term from geology.
Rock or mineral that contains a lot of silica, and relatively less Iron and Magnesium.
Felsic minerals = contain virtually no Iron and Magnesium.
Felsic minerals often have a light colour.
For example: quartz, orthoclase (potassium feldspar), some types of plagioclase.
Felsic minerals in magma = the white minerals in volcanic magma.
Such as: feldspar, quartz (silica, silica), muscovite.
Silica = silicon dioxide = Sio2 = mainly present in quartz.
Silica is poorly soluble in water.
Mafic = opposite of felsic.
Geological term for rocks and minerals that:
-- contain relatively high amounts of Iron (Fe) and Magnesium (Mg).
-- contain relatively little Silica (SiO2) (between 45% and 52% Silicon of total mass).
Intermediate rock = rock that lies between two other rocks.
Rock that does not contain relatively high amounts of Iron, Magnesium or Silica.
