MACROGONUS CACTUS (ECHINOPSIS MACROGONA)
Scientific names:
Echinopsis macrogona (current unrecognised scientific name).
Trichocereus macrogonus (former unrecognised scientific name).
DESCRIPTION OF THE MACROGONUS CACTUS
Trichocereus macrogonus is an old and invalid name for probably a Trichocereus peruvianus.
But the name Trichocereus macrogonus has never been accepted as a valid official name.
Because it is unclear what exact characteristics this Trichocereus macrogonus would have had.
Echinopsis macrogona is therefore also an invalid name for probably an Echinopsis peruviana.
So all Cacti offered with the name Echinopsis macrogona therefore belong to Echinopsis peruviana.
Origin of Trichocereus macrogonus
The description from 1849 (!) was based on a Cactus in the Berlin Botanical Garden.
However, the natural finding place of this Cactus was unknown.
Meaning of Trichocereus macrogonus
Trichocereus = hairy cereus. The flowers have long brown-black hairs.
macrogonus = with long or large ribs, with long or large angles.
